Is Trader Joe’s soy chorizo healthy? |

When the Trader Joe’s Soy Chorizo first came out on the shelves, people were pretty excited about it. Chorizo is being made in America, and is being made vegan (you don’t have to worry about the non-vegan stuff). The ingredients are minimal, and it’s sold at a low price. The problem: it’s not the healthiest thing in the world. Is it really healthy though?

Soy chorizo isn’t the only “fake” meat-type meat product you’ll find in stores—it’s a pricey “health food” that’s actually made from a soy bean pattie, not meat. However, unlike the chorizo you buy at the supermarket, it’s high in protein, low in calories, and claims to be a heart-healthy alternative to real meat. So is Trader Joe’s soy chorizo a healthier option or a gimmick? Let’s take it from the source and find out.

Soy chorizo is a type of Spanish sausage made from soybeans and pork. It’s popular in Spain and also available in most Trader Joe’s stores. It’s also often called “soy crumbles” or “soy granules.”

Trader Joe’s has a large selection of meat substitutes for vegetarians. However, some are healthier than others, and others should certainly be left on the shelf, such as their vegan chorizo. The fat and salt content of soy chorizo is high. Plus, contrary to common perception, too much soy is harmful for you.

How healthy is soy chorizo, on the other hand?

As the chorizo cooks, it releases a spicy, somewhat greasy sauce that enhances the flavor of the meal. Soy chorizo, on the other hand, has less than half the fat and calories of pig chorizo. And, since the taste and texture of soy chorizo are so similar to the genuine thing, I consider it a caloric flavor bargain.

What is the calorie count of soy chorizo? Nutritional Information

Is Soyrizo thus superior than chorizo?

Soyrizo is one of those very unusual soy-based food items that really tastes better than the genuine thing — not identically, but close enough. The neon-colored grease, fat, and cholesterol are all missing (and, yes, a hint of meatiness). Soyrizo is also 60% less calorie-dense than chorizo.

What is the shelf life of Trader Joe’s soy chorizo?

Better still, after the box has been opened, the easiest method to deal with leftover Soy Chorizo is to place it in a glass jar and scoop it out as required. I write the date on it. It lasts a long time in the fridge for me, easily two weeks, maybe even 4-6 weeks?
