Plastic is a controversial topic, and it’s a tough one to tackle because so many people have strong opinions on it. One camp is quickly growing, however, that believes that all forms of plastic are the same, and that it’s OK to use plastic as long as it’s recycled.  This belief runs contrary to another set of beliefs that have been around for a long time. Some of the many reasons people believe this way are: plastics are non-toxic,  they are lightweight and convenient,  they are biodegradable, and they are cheap.  And because of all of these reasons, people believe that the use of plastic is not only acceptable, but necessary.

Earlier this month, I published a study titled, “Colonization of the human large intestine by small intestine bacterium Prevotella copri: prevalence and contribution to inflammation”. That experiment used a batch of Velveeta cheese, which was produced at a plant owned by Kraft Foods. In the study, the bacteria found in the Velveeta cheese were heat-sensitive, meaning that they would only multiply in the incubator if it was at a temperature of 90  °F and above.

Cheese is a major part of many American diets, but people have long been unsure of the origin of its most popular dairy product: Velveeta cheese. Originally made from beef, this processed cheese can now be found in a variety of forms, including shredded, elbow, and block varieties. Many people think that Velveeta cheese is made from plastic, but this is not the case. Rather, Velveeta cheese is made from non-dairy ingredients that give it a plastic-like texture..
