Overeaters Anonymous is a 12 step program for those who struggle with weight and food issues. The program is secular and non-denominational and has no relationship to any other organization. It is based on the principles of recovery from drug addiction and is based on the Twelve Steps of Alcoholics Anonymous. In the program, the participant is referred to as a “sponsee” and is encouraged to go to meetings, along with having daily prayer and meditation.

As a long time member of OA, I have been a little disappointed with how widespread the concept of religious OA has become here lately. It’s not much of a mystery why: we (members and non-members alike) all tend to believe in the power of the higher power(s) in our lives in order to achieve sobriety. OA itself is not religion, however, and does not claim to be one.

Overeaters Anonymous (OA) is a 12-step program that is based on the principles of Alcoholics Anonymous (AA). The program was originally created by Bill Wilson, who gathered a group of alcoholics at his Massachusetts home to share their stories and help each other through their addiction. OA was first published in the book “The Twelve Steps and Twelve Traditions” in 1957.

OA is not a religious organization, and it does not adhere to any particular religious philosophy. It is a program that follows spiritual concepts, with participants approaching these ideas individually with a Higher Power of their own interpretation. You may read or listen to select OA members’ contributions here.

Furthermore, in Overeaters Anonymous, what is abstinence?

Abstinence is described as abstaining from obsessive eating and compulsive food habits while working toward or maintaining a healthy body weight in Overeaters Anonymous.

Also, what is the meal plan for Overeaters Anonymous? OA is a rehabilitation organization for individuals suffering from compulsive eating, binge eating, and other eating disorders. OA has developed a Plan of Eating to assist individuals in overcoming their compulsive eating habits, making good food choices, and recognizing particular eating patterns. The strategy is tailored to the person.

You may also wonder what occurs at an Overeaters Anonymous meeting.

Overeaters Anonymous meetings begin with a recitation of the Serenity Prayer, as do most 12-step organizations. Because each group is unique, some meetings invite all participants to participate in the prayer, while others have a group facilitator repeat the prayer to the whole room.

Is Overeaters Anonymous really beneficial?

WHY DOESN’T ANONYMOUS OVEREATERS WORK? Overeaters Anonymous (OA), a fellowship based on Alcoholics Anonymous’ Twelve Steps, is one of the oldest and most accessible services for individuals with eating disorders, and it’s also free. Some individuals like the program and recover as a result of it, however OA does not work for the majority of people.
