Mineral oil, or petroleum jelly, is a ”food grade” laxative that is commonly used for its moisturizing effects. It is a common household item, but is also found in many commercial products such as soaps, lotions, shampoos and even in some medicines. Mineral oil, popularly known as baby oil, is made from petroleum and is readily available in most local stores.

When you’re eating out at a restaurant, you may see a note on the menu that says something like “Mineral oil used in the kitchen. We do not recommend consuming.” But, in fact, mineral oil is not necessarily a laxative. There are many different types of mineral oil, all of which differ in their health effects, how they should be used, and the safety of their use in food. But they all have one thing in common, they all have been used as laxatives.
