Is corn a carbohydrate food? |

Corn is a star of the humble food world, ubiquitous and so cheap, we chow down on it by the bushel. But what does it do for us? Corn is a staple food for a lot of people, a way to make cheap, healthy food taste like it’s more expensive, which is how it got its name. It’s also a high-fiber food, which might help lower cholesterol. But corn is controversial, because it’s a source of high-fructose corn syrup, which is a major cause of obesity.

Every now and then I see some blog posts claiming that corn is a carbohydrate . The reason I see this is because my blog  From Hungry to Hope  is about both nutrition and  low-carbohydrate weight loss strategies. I appreciate the fact that the title is called “Is corn a carbohydrate food? |” because it is apparent that the author means to write that corn is not a carbohydrate food. So, I appreciate the author’s use of the word “not.”  By saying “is” when “not” is clearly intended, the author is clearly writing that corn is a carbohydrate  food.

Is corn a carbohydrate food? The answer is yes. Corn is a starchy carbohydrate, meaning it’s carbohydrates from the category of carbohydrates that can be converted into glucose, which is the main source of energy for your body. So, what are carbohydrates? The basic definition of carbohydrates is “carbon-containing compounds that are found in the form of sugars, starches, and gums”.. Corn, like other starchy vegetables such as sweet potato, has more carbohydrates than light vegetables such as broccoli or Brussels sprouts. However, one medium ear of corn (about 12 cup kernels) has fewer than 100 calories. It’s also almost fat-free (just 1 gram) and high in fiber (2 grams).
