The question, is apple fritter a doughnut? is a tricky one to answer, yet there are those who would have you believe it is. The issue is that the U.S. Food Code and the FDA only use the term “donut” to describe the kind of cake that is deep fried in batter. The code defines the word as a “paste-filled, deep-fried cake covered on top with a thin batter.” Therefore, a doughnut is not a doughnut if it is deep fried.

Do you know what an apple fritter is? If you’re like me, you may not have ever heard of the  sweet treat before, and you may be wondering why I’m writing a blog post about this. Through my research, I’ve found that there is quite a bit of confusion when it comes to the definition of an apple fritter. Case in point: “fritter” is another word for fried, and the apple fritter is a fried dough product. But is it a doughnut? However, there are some differences between the apple fritter and a doughnut.  The apple fritter does not contain a hole in the centre of the apple fritter.
