I am always trying to figure out what type of lectern I should buy for my classroom. I have a few in mind, but am not sure what is the best to use. Is a lectern the same as a podium? I have always thought so, but I wanted to know how to properly label this in my classroom.

It is said that the origins of the podium, or lectern, is ancient Greece. It was called a podium, from the Greek word meaning “foot” – and referred to the raised platform at the front of the room used to speak to the crowd. The earliest known use of the podium is found in the works of the Greek historian Herodotus.

A lectern is a podium that is designed specifically for a church or other religious institution. These are typically made of wood and are used to hold church services and ceremonies. They are typically less expensive than a podium and don’t have as many features. However, they are still functional and great for churches who are more interested in function than style.

A lectern is a high, slant-topped desk behind which you, as the speaker, stand and read your presentation notes. Consider the word “lecture” while thinking about a lectern. During a presentation, a speaker stands on an elevated platform called a podium. Consider the word podiatrist, which means “foot doctor.”

What is the name of the podium, as well?
