I’ve always had a love for tamales. I mean, who doesn’t love them? They’re probably one of the most beloved, nostalgic foods that you can find in Latin America. And when you think of the word ‘Tamale’, you probably think of a traditional, dry, corn, husk filled treat. But, the truth is that tamales can be made in many ways, in many different flavors. So, how many calories are there in a Guatemalan tamale?

The tamale is a staple on every Guatemalan table, and a part of even more traditions. From a cultural perspective, the tamale is the most representative form of food that Guatemalans have, and it is eaten throughout the country. As for its nutritional value, its main ingredient is corn, which is high in calories and becomes a treat once it has been prepared in the Guatemalan way. So is the tamale really a “treat”?

When the weather is oh-so-sweltering and you’re all sweaty and gross, it’s only natural to crave a quick and relatively healthy snack. Sadly, there are few things as convenient as a fried tortilla, but is it healthy? To find out, we consulted the experts: the researchers who work for Healthy Choice, who’ve been on the job since 1960.

As a result, the issue arises: are tamales fattening? For those unfamiliar with the delicacy, a tamale is prepared with seasoned, cooked pork wrapped in corn husks and covered with cornmeal, or masa (or banana leaf). Tamales are frequently unhealthy, which is unfortunate for people who love them.

Guatemalan tamales come in a variety of flavors. With Guatemala, tamales are usually wrapped in green’maxan’ leaves (Calathea lutea), while Chuchitos, which are similar to Mexican tamales, are covered in corn husks. The masa is produced from non-sweet corn, such as what is known in the United States as feed corn.
