Peanuts are a legume and not a grain, like most people think. They are a seed (technically a fruit) where the seed is surrounded by an edible pod. Peanuts grown in the U.S. must be shelled before they are sold, as they are illegal to sell in the shell. If you ever wondered why peanuts aren’t sold in bulk then this is why. They are a seed that contains a gooey substance that is not edible and ends up in peanut butter among other things. That’s why peanuts are not sold in bulk.

Peanuts are so controversial because of the health claims it makes. It’s popular as a superfood. You can read about the benefits in the article but for this post, I wanted to know if peanuts are a grain or a protein.

This question has been asked and answered many times. It’s the question every parent asks their kid when they think they’re having a peanut allergy. The truth is that peanuts are not a grain and they are not protein. They are a legume, a member of the same plant family as beans and lentils.
