This is a question that many people ask when they come to Jamaica for the first time. It’s an interesting question because it has multiple meanings and can be used in different contexts.

The ital meaning slang is a term that has been used in Jamaica for many years. It means to give or offer something without expecting anything in return.

Ital, a play on the word ‘vital,’ is a Rastafari spiritual system that requires its adherents to consume only unprocessed food produced in the soil around them. It’s usually a plant-based diet.

What exactly is an Ital diet in this context?

Ital, the Jamaican Rastafari movement’s vegetarian diet, is primarily designed to enhance health and vitality. Being a vegetarian is believed to bring one closer to the universal energy and life force while also avoiding the death of God’s creations. The term Ital is taken from the word vital in English.

The issue therefore becomes, why don’t Rastafarians consume salt? Ital or I-tal is how Rastafarians refer to their most holy meals. Rastafarians should eat food that is natural, pure, and from the soil. This excludes foods that have been chemically altered or include artificial ingredients. Some Rastafarians eschew sodium and salt, particularly salt that has been chemically iodized.

Is it also good to eat an Italian diet?

Ital cuisine supports mental, physical, spiritual, and environmental well-being. It’s as fresh as possible, devoid of additives, preservatives, and other chemicals, and dairy-free in the majority of instances.”

Why don’t Rastafarians eat meat?

Pork is regarded unclean because pigs are scavengers, and therefore pork is harmful to the human body. Because they think that touching flesh is the same as touching death, most rastas do not consume any kind of meat.

Why do Rastafarians use the pronoun “I”?

It alludes to everyone’s oneness with Jah (Rastafari for their “God,” Ethiopian Emperor Ras Tafari Haile Selassie I). The phrase “I and I” refers to the Rastafarian concept that Jah lives in all people and that they all exist as one people, united by Jah. Instead of saying “unity,” Rastas will use “inity.”

Vegetarians do not consume fish, meat, or poultry, although they do consume eggs and dairy products. Vegans observe the same no-meat rule as vegetarians, but they also avoid animal products or by-products including eggs, dairy, and honey. Some Rastafarians think Christ was black, while others see Ethiopian Emperor Haile Selassie as Christ’s black messiah and rebirth. They consume mainly “Ital” foods, primarily fresh fruits and vegetables, and maintain a vegan lifestyle.
