A lot of bird lovers are concerned about the safety of food coloring in hummingbird feeders.  It’s important to note that the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has not found any evidence that any synthetic food coloring will affect hummingbirds.  However, there can be health consequences for people eating food coloring.  Hummingbirds are considered to be one of the most colorful birds in the world.  Their beautiful feathers are used for many products, including decorator fabrics, animal toys, and even clothes.  Hummingbirds are also very popular for their ability to make musical sounds.  Because of their popularity, hummingbird feeders are commonly used in parks.  Hummingbird feeders are

Important reminder: Do not feed hummingbirds Mccormick food coloring! This food coloring is made with carmine, a dye derived from crushed cochineal bugs. Although it is often used as an ingredient in candy, ice cream, yogurt, and other sweets, carmine has been linked to serious health risks for hummingbirds. According to the American Bird Conservancy , one teaspoon of carmine can kill a hummingbird, and may cause severe eye damage. A better question to ask might be, is it safe for the birds that eat it? There are multiple colors of Mccormick food coloring on the market, and some of these colors are not safe for mammals like us. Here are some simple tips to help you tell if it is safe for birds.

True, there is no conclusive evidence that red dye is detrimental to hummingbirds at this time. Hummingbirds aren’t people, and mice aren’t mice. However, since all hummingbird feeders contain red components that attract the birds, the dye is at best superfluous and at worst possibly dangerous.
