Many farmers invest thousands of dollars in fertilizers to help their crops grow, but have no idea how much they need. The result is some farmers are over-fertilizing their fields with the wrong kind of fertilizer, resulting in poisoning the soil. The problem is that it’s very difficult to determine how much fertilizer is needed for a certain type of crop, even with the use of soil test kits.

If you don’t know, basic food plot fertilizer recommendations are: ~ Fertilize around October or November. ~ Two to three months after the first spring tillage, apply a second fertilization tillage, usually for between 1/2 and 1/3 of the amount of food intended to be planted. ~ A month after the second tillage, apply the final tillage (this may be spread out over a few weeks). ~ The final tillage should be about 1/4 the amount of food intended to be planted.

The last few years have seen a dramatic increase in the amount of food we produce and consume, and as a result we now rely on ever-increasing amounts of fertilizer to produce that food. Our crop yields have increased, food prices have declined, and we’ve become accustomed to a richer, more varied diet than we were as a nation only a generation ago. But this is not a well-fed nation. The majority of America’s food is produced on small farms, and as a result the average family only eats about 3 pounds of food per day. So, how much fertilizer do we need to put on a food plot to produce enough food and keep our family and friends and pocketbooks full?

We suggest 300 pounds per acre as a starting point. Keep an eye on it. If you’re spreading fertilizer before planting, don’t plow it in too deeply. Anything above the top 1-3 inches of soil will be thrown away.

I’d also want to know how much fertilizer I’ll need for a quarter-acre area.

43560 square feet per acre divided by 5000 (five pounds per 1000 square feet) is 8.7 bags per acre. For a fresh plot, I’m estimating a minimum of 2000 pounds of lime per acre…just guessing without a soil test, of course. For your 1/4 acre, you’ll need 500 pounds.

Also, how do you figure out how much fertilizer to apply per acre? (2) Product quantity required to apply 43.5 pounds of nitrogen per acre. Divide 100 by the first number in the fertilizer ratio to get the quantity of product required to provide 1 pound of nitrogen per thousand square feet. Divide 100 by 16 for 16-4-8 fertilizer, for example.

What size food plot do I require?

In general, even on the tiniest of lots, a minimum plot size of 1/4 acre should be utilized if food is required. In a coverless agricultural area with parcel sizes approaching 40 acres, 2-3 percent of total land in food plots is a fair, approximate estimate without going overboard.
