How hot is Korean chili powder? |

Korean chili powder (김밥) is a popular ingredient in Korean cooking and for good reason: its mildly spicy, sweet and can be used in a variety of recipes. As the name suggests, the powder comes from chili peppers, but its flavor is more than just hot. The ingredients used for the processed powder also contribute to its taste, including garlic, onion and green onion. The resulting powder has a sharp, sweet taste that makes it ideal for stir-frying, cooking rice or using as a garnish or flavoring in soups and stews.  With so many delicious ways to use Korean chili powder,  we wanted to share the best ways to use it.

“Fromhungertohope” is a food blog written by a group of people who are about to start grad school. We’re in our final year of undergraduate school and are trying to fill our time with useful and creative things. We believe that food should be pleasurable, and that learning about it should make you excited for the delicious things you eat.

If you’ve ever had Korean chili powder, or gochujang, it’s a very unique flavor. We often say that it tastes like “chili powder but sweeter.” But, is it really that different than the American or Mexican stuff? Well, according to Andrew Zimmern, it is.

The chili pepper is long, thin, and moderate in appearance. Green (unripe) chili peppers have a Scoville heat rating of approximately 1,500.

What exactly is in Korean chili powder?

Korean gochujang is produced using hot pepper powder, which is finely crushed dried hot peppers (hot pepper paste). It will provide a smooth texture to your gochujang.

How spicy is Korean red pepper powder, for example? It’s usually prepared using cayenne pepper and has a Scoville heat rating of 30,000 to 50,000.
