Start with a question you really want answered: How does a paramecium digest food? To answer this question, we are going to look at the inside of a paramecium, which is a single-celled organism found in freshwater that is similar to a jellyfish. Paramecia are very simple organisms, and have no brains, hearts, lungs, or other organs. They also have no digestive tract, so what do they do to digest food?

After the meal falls into the oral groove, the paramecium’s cilia whisk it into the cell mouth, along with some water. The meal enters the gullet via the cellmouth. The digested meal subsequently enters the cytoplasm, causing the vacuole to shrink.

This is an organelle that collects surplus fluids and excretes them. It uses its little collection tubes and contracts them to purge different types of waste in the same way. Paramecia also eliminate waste such as nitrogen by allowing it to diffuse through the cell membrane.
