How do you make Saltwash paint? |

We love painting, and we love trying new recipes, and we love our new endeavor, Saltwash. We’re a brand new in-home kitchenware company that is dedicated to teaching the world how to cook. We want to help people with great recipes become artists of the kitchen, and share the process with them.

One of the biggest questions I get when people ask me about the process of making Saltwash is how does it work? The answer is it doesn’t. It’s a bit of magic. Saltwash is waxy and acts as a binder. We mix the Saltwash in a 1:1 ratio with the oil paint and it becomes like a paste. You apply this paste on the area you’d like to apply the Saltwash on and then let the paint sit overnight. The next day you go back and scrape off the paint with a spatula or whatever. The paint comes off and the Saltwash is left behind. You rinse it off with a bucket of water and the result is a glassy smooth surface.

I’ve been working on my own artistic practice for over ten years, and began to create a more prolific body of work around two years ago. Saltwash is my new body of work, a series of paintings that look at the qualities of earth, oil, and sunlight, and what happens when (and if) these things combine. The subject is close to my heart. My grandparents live on a farm in the Appalachian mountains of West Virginia, and have lived through most of the last century close to the land and the earth and its bounty. Recipe for Salt Paint

  1. 3 tbsp. of plaster of Paris
  2. 2 teaspoons of water
  3. a couple of teaspoons of paint (I used acrylic)
  4. 1 tablespoon kosher salt (kosher salt is required for the texture; regular table salt will not suffice.)

Because Saltwash® powder is produced with genuine sea salt, it dries rapidly and has excellent adherence. It is always used as a base coat and may be blended with any brand, color, or finish of paint. Saltwash® may be applied to virtually any surface that accepts paint after it has been blended to the appropriate consistency.
