Can you eat cereal after wisdom teeth removal? |

It’s normal to be concerned about what foods are safe to eat following wisdom teeth removal. Your oral surgeon will likely provide you with a list of recommended foods and drinks after your tooth extraction, and it’s important to adhere to the instructions given by your dentist or doctor. Many patients have asked, “Can I eat cereal after wisdom teeth removal?” The answer is yes, but it depends on the type of cereal.

In general, most cereals that do not contain hard bits, like granola or dry flakes/puffs are okay. Thick cereals like oatmeal are ideal for those who have gone through a wisdom teeth extraction because it does not require too much effort or chewing (as opposed to thicker cereals that require more work and potentially damage the surgery site). Suitable breakfast cereals include likes of oat bran, cream of wheat, farina and other similar hot cereals that are soft enough not to irritate the surgery site. It’s also important to use a soft-bristled toothbrush when brushing your teeth and drinking plenty water afterwards in order to keep your mouth clean and moist. Special attention should be taken when eating cold food as cold food can trigger discomfort in some individuals who have just gone through a dental procedure.

What to Expect After Wisdom Teeth Removal

Wisdom teeth removal can be a very uncomfortable and painful experience. After the procedure, it is important to follow the instructions of your dentist. This typically includes eating soft foods, avoiding strenuous activity, and avoiding food that could irritate the affected area. This section will cover what to expect after wisdom teeth removal and a few tips on how to best care for yourself.

Swelling

Swelling is very common after having wisdom teeth removed. It is important to keep the area clean by gently rinsing your mouth with a solution of warm salt water as prescribed. Apply an ice pack or cold compress to the outside of your jaw and then alternate with a warm compress or heating pad to help relieve any pain and swelling. You may also want to use pillows or towels to prop your head up in order to elevate the area and reduce swelling. Swelling may last for several days but should decrease with time and no direct cause for alarm.

It is normal for there to be some bruising of the skin around the site of extraction, but this should subside within 5-7 days. Bruising can also occur on other parts of the face such as around the eyes and chin, however, it will usually disappear eventually without any medical treatment needed.

If pain increases in severity or other signs such as redness, pus-like substance emanating from wounds, odors from an infection etc., contact your dentist immediately for further advice and possible antibiotics.

Bleeding

Bleeding after wisdom tooth removal is expected. A gauze pad placed at the extraction site will help to reduce bleeding. To assist in stopping the bleeding, you may bite on the gauze for 30 minutes with constant firm pressure. For any bleeding that persists for more than 45 minutes, contact your dentist or oral surgeon.

Although a small amount of blood from the surgery area is normal, if there is heavy bleeding (like gushing), place a moist tea bag directly over exposed clot and bite down for 30 minutes with firm pressure. This should produce tannic acid, which acts as an astringent and helps form a blood clot to stop the bleeding. If this does not work contact your doctor or an oral surgeon immediately to assess whether further action is required.

Pain

After wisdom tooth extraction, it is normal to experience some pain, swelling and discomfort in the treatment area. Soft foods are typically recommended for a few days after the procedure since solid foods can cause further inflammation of the area. Eating soft snacks like pudding, Jell-O®, mashed potatoes, soup and cereal are appropriate options for after wisdom teeth removal. While consuming cold and hot foods can be uncomfortable in the early days following your surgery, eating a nutritious diet filled with calciferous vegetables such as kale and spinach will help you properly heal from your procedure. In order to best gauge what types of food are suitable for consumption after your surgery, it is best to consult with your dentist on an individual basis and ask what type of food can be consumed safely during your recovery. Additionally, your dentist may recommend taking an over-the-counter pain medication or anti-inflammatory medication if necessary to reduce any discomfort.

Bruising

After wisdom teeth removal, it is normal to experience some degree of bruising in the area where the extraction took place. This is particularly common when the procedure has been done under local anesthetic and doesn’t require general anesthesia. When general anesthesia is used, bruising may still occur but the extent of it could be reduced.

Most bruises from wisdom teeth removal will appear shortly after the extraction, however, larger bruises may take a few days to become visible. In general, expect bruising and swelling to reach its peak about 24-48 hours after surgery. After this point, it will start to go down as your body begins to heal itself.

You may find that using cold compresses helps reduce swelling and helps alleviate discomfort. It’s important not to apply direct pressure over the wound site as this can delay healing or cause further damage. If you note any signs of infection such as persistent swelling or redness around the extraction site, please contact your dentist immediately.
