When you first think about using a compost bin to sort your produce and other household waste, it may seem like an overly complicated and space-consuming endeavor. However, there are many ways to make daily life easier, and one of these is to use compostable containers for your food waste. Choosing a compostable container for your waste is simple, and there are several options to choose from. A variety of these containers are made of non-plastic materials, like paper, and are designed to be degradable and compostable.

In our series of posts about waste, today we’ll take a look at the issue of compostable plastic containers. We’d like to know what you think about whether or not these containers are compostable.

In general, nearly everything is compostable, even plastics. But some companies have been known to put recyclable materials in recycled plastic that is then used in a product. Some of them have even been spotted with the words “compostable” and “compost” on their products. While they appear to be compostable, these types of plastics often contain a variety of harmful chemicals and do not break down.

Following allegations that a significant percentage of the company’s to-go packaging was treated with the possibly hazardous, cancer-linked chemical PFAS , Amazon-owned supermarket chain Whole Foods is removing biodegradable coated paper wrapping from its high-end hot and cold food bars and bakery.

People often wonder whether the containers from Whole Foods Take Out are biodegradable.

“We adopted compostable containers to minimise our environmental impact,” Whole Foods Market stated in an emailed response to Bloomberg. “However, given recent concerns regarding the potential presence of PFAS, we have removed all prepared foods and bakery packaging mentioned in the study.”

Is it possible to microwave Whole Foods containers in addition to those mentioned above?
