What is World Hunger Relief Week?
Yum! and its brands (KFC, Pizza Hut, Taco Bell, Long John Silver's and A&W Restaurants) created World Hunger Relief Week to highlight the movement to stop global hunger by increasing awareness, raising money and encouraging volunteerism. With more than 35,000 restaurants in 110+ countries and more than 1,000,000 employees, franchisees, vendors and our families mobilized during this week, we will make a difference in our local communities and on a global scale.
Our core philanthropic mission is to feed people in need – the company and its brands have a long history of fighting hunger in the U.S. and we are the world’s largest donor of prepared food. In 2007, Yum! provided more than 10 million pounds of food (or $45 million) and is the primary sponsor of the Dare to Care Food Bank (an affiliate of America’s Second Harvest) based in Louisville.
We understand, however, that hunger has no borders. Hunger affects more than 850,000,000 people around the world every day. As the world’s largest restaurant company, addressing the issue of hunger on a global scale is a natural fit. We reached out to the world’s largest hunger relief agency, and subsequently, our senior executives made visits to WFP operations in Sudan and Guatemala. After seeing WFP in action, we were compelled to create an unprecedented, globally-focused effort to raise awareness about hunger and raise funds to help feed the hungry poor by donating to the WFP.
With your help, we can make a huge impact in combatting hunger around the world. Together we can help significantly in bridging the gap between hunger and hope. See our worldwide results from our inaugural worldwide appeal in 2007.
